Introducing

Erika Chmura
! Based in the Metropolitan NYC area, Erika is a trusted advisor to businesses of all shapes and sizes, training them on how to improve their online presence using a variety of tools and strategies. Her goal is to empower her clients to engage with SEO confidently.

We asked her everything from how she first got into SEO to what empowers her to be the brilliant woman she is 💪🏽

How did you get into SEO?

After the pandemic, I gained a new appreciation for every minute of my day, and like many others, walked away from what I was doing and went on a search for a new professional challenge, one that would be exciting and worthy of my time.

My search ended when I found a position helping clients at Semrush. I had no background in SEO but experience in training and project management, so it seemed like an interesting fit. I also got a great vibe about the culture from the people I met during the interview process, so I decided to go for it. I spent an exciting and intense few months learning anything and everything I could find that was related to SEO and our platform.

SEO is forever changing, and advising others on it has been an awesome challenge. I have a supportive and amazing team, and as a Latina, working with clients in Latin America felt like home to me. I’m glad I made the switch to SEO and now I just want to keep improving my knowledge and grow through new connections and experiences.

What is your favourite SEO task?

I have the most fun with keyword research! Finding those special keywords that sometimes completely change a client’s perspective on where their campaign can go, and working from there.

What is your go-to tool or resource that you can't live without?

It may be difficult to grasp what Google is trying to achieve, but if we carefully analyze the SERP that’s half the work, so most of the time I’m just looking at Google itself.

What is something you learned in SEO that made you have an 'AHA' moment?

At first, I thought SEO was mostly a technical process until I realized that a lot of success stories were based on creativity! Different clients can look at the exact same data and have completely different strategies on how to use it (and different levels of success). I find the creativity of some of my clients mind-blowing, especially the way they create and optimize content that I would have never thought of. They really understand their persona and find original and creative ways to hook them in. SEO works of art!

What is your proudest industry achievement?

I’m proud to be introducing SEO tools to some markets that are just beginning to understand the power behind optimization and what it can do for their businesses. It’s awesome when I can help a big company simplify tasks, or when I’m able to help a small business owner take charge of their digital marketing campaign and do so with confidence. I see these wins happening every day, and it feels great to be a part of it.

What advice would you give women who are starting out in SEO?

Don’t let imposter syndrome get you, SEO is not a constant, no one in this industry knows it all. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the process of learning. Don’t hold yourself to impossibly high standards and know that you have other women to rely on for guidance and empowerment.

Give a shout out to a woman in the industry who inspires you and tell us why

Eleonora Diniz - She’s a powerhouse with more than 30 years of experience in the industry. I’ve learned so much from her videos and admire her strong presence and longevity. It would be nice to meet her one of these days!

Finally, what empowers you to be the brilliant woman you are?

The work motto: “A ship at harbour is safe, but that's not what ships are for”
