Introducing Kat Hill! Kat is an experienced UK-based SEO Manager, with a proven track record in driving organic traffic growth and achieving measurable results. Outside of work, she's a self-confessed tech nerd, enthusiastic foodie, and dedicated rugby prop, always ready to 'tackle' new challenges.

How did you get into SEO?

I've always had an interest in websites and used to tinker with a few of my own when I was younger. Although my career initially took a brief detour in a different direction, I soon realised it wasn’t the right fit for me. That led me to join a digital marketing agency, where I began learning about SEO, building on the foundation I already had. Since then, I’ve worked across several agencies, in-house roles, and as a freelancer. I’m now back in an agency setting, where I thrive on the fast pace and variety of work.

What is your favourite SEO task?

I most like getting stuck under the bonnet of a website and doing an in-depth technical SEO audit.

What is your go-to tool or resource that you can't live without?

JS side by side - it's a simple bookmarklet that displays the current URL with and without JavaScript side by side in the current window.

What is something you learned in SEO that made you have an 'AHA' moment?

One big 'AHA' moment for me was realising that SEO isn’t just about keywords or rankings, it’s about intent. Once I understood how important search intent is behind every query, everything clicked. Instead of trying to optimise pages just to target keywords, I started thinking more about what the user actually wants to find.

What is your proudest industry achievement?

Because of my and the team's work, a former client was able to open a new, larger clinic with state-of-the-art facilities. Seeing our SEO work drive real-world growth and success like that has been incredibly rewarding.

What advice would you give those starting out in SEO?

SEO can feel overwhelming at times - there’s a constant flow of information, a lot of testing and guesswork, and plenty of conflicting opinions online. My advice is to stay curious, focus on learning, and subscribe to a few trusted newsletters like Women in Tech SEO (since you're reading this, you're already half-way there!) and Aleyda Solis’ #SEOFOMO. And don’t forget to prioritise your work-life balance, SEO is a rewarding but demanding career.

Give a shout out to a person of marginalised gender in the industry who inspires you and tell us why

MGX Digital’s founder, Margaux Marshall, is one of the most proficient SEOs I’ve ever worked with. She’s been a mentor, colleague, and a friend, as well as manager, and I’m so grateful we get to work together. It takes real courage to start your own agency, and I have so much admiration for everything she’s built.

Finally, what empowers you to be the brilliant person you are?

Kindness, empathy and a lot of tea and coffee :)
