Introducing

Toma Valčiukaitė
!
Based in the UK, Toma is a Senior Technical SEO Consultant, she leads a team of five other Technical SEO team members at Digital Ethos. We asked her everything from how she first got into SEO to what empowers her to be the brilliant woman she is 💪🏽

How did you get into SEO?

My first introduction to SEO was when I was 14! I had created my first website and wanted to understand more about how to make my website rank on Google. I started to analyse other websites and that's how I learned the basic SEO things like meta data, headings and page structure.

What is your favourite SEO task?

I would say solving indexing issues, as those usually have the biggest impact on organic traffic and user accessibility. I also enjoy implementing Schema to specific elements of the website, blog posts and FAQ sections.

What is your go-to tool or resource that you can't live without?

ScreamingFrog & Ahrefs, as well as Google Search Console which is a great tool to know which keywords get loads of impressions but no clicks. In general, just Googling some of the terms you want to rank for and reviewing your competitor pages can help you see what you need to overrank them.

What is something you learned in SEO that made you have an 'AHA' moment?

My "AHA" moment was that every industry needs to be researched individually as the same changes on 2 different websites can impact a website differently.

What is your proudest industry achievement?

Many would include things like traffic increases, indexing the right pages, solving technical issues or fixing the structure of the website. For me, it was when a website had a penalty and didn't receive any organic traffic due to different black hat techniques. I had to review the whole website and remove all the hidden keywords and disavow all the bad backlinks.

What advice would you give women who are starting out in SEO?

Keep track of when changes have been made as you want to know which change had the biggest impact and track specific goals to see if you have increased leads or purchases.

Give a shout out to a woman in the industry who inspires you and tell us why

There are so many women in the Women in Tech SEO and I think they are all doing such a great job. Keep up the good work!

Finally, what empowers you to be the brilliant woman you are?

Sometimes the things you are most afraid of are the things that make you feel alive. Don't be afraid to risk it all.
